the anti-TBR tag!

Hello, friends!

Recently, Ngoc tagged me for the Anti-TBR tag and I happily took the opportunity to rant about books I don’t love/don’t care about, as I feel like I’ve mostly been talking about things I do like. And some negativity can be fun sometime, lol.

This tag was created by Nicole @ Nicole & Her Books.

A popular book everyone loves that you have no interest in reading?

35068705Will I be canceled for this? Probably.

I know that everyone and their moms love The Poppy War, and I’m happy to hear it, truly. But there’s nothing about it that appeals to me.

Like, adult fantasy, historical, LONG ASS BOOK (I believe is like over 500+ pages), is pretty much every single thing I do not look for in a book, lmao.

I know it’s kind of a touchy subject because literally EVERYONE loves and raves about this book, and again, I’m sure it’s great, it’s just not for me at all.

A classic book you don’t have an interest in reading?

Honestly? It would be easier to answer the classics I *do* have an interest in reading.

I have four that I’m interested in: The Great Gatsby (literally for no other reason than I became obsessed with the song ‘nothing else i could do’, by ella jane, and it is inspired in this book lol), The Picture of Dorian Gray (because of the movie with Ben Barnes), Frankenstein (I watched Mary Shelley and !!!!!!!!) and Dracula (idk why but like vampires’ origin i guess?).

Apart from these four, I literally do not care about reading anything else. Thanks.

An author whose books you have no interest in reading?

16096824. sy475 I’m going to have to copy Ngoc’s answer for this one and go with Sarah J. Maas

Y’all do not understand how popular this author is in Brazil. Literally, her fanbase is huge and they’re also lowkey toxic AF and pretty much hate on every person who does not like her books, which is ew.

So the fact is fandom is gross definitely puts me off even more, but nonetheless, nothing could seem less interesting to me than a 500+ page book about faes.

An author you have read a couple of books from and have decided their books are not for you?

I am kind of sad to say it’s probably Helene Dunbar.

I did not hate any of the books I read by her, but I didn’t love them either. They were both very mediocre and forgettable 3 stars, which doesn’t make me very excited to read anything by her in the future.

It’s not even that I didn’t connect with the writing, but her characters just didn’t really get stuck in my feels at all and I forgot about them as soon as I wasn’t reading the book.

Again: there’s nothing inherently bad about her work, but we definitely did not click like I wanted us to.

A genre you have no interest in OR a genre you tried to get into and couldn’t?

Fantasy, definitely. Even though I follow so many creators who love and read so much SFF, I couldn’t care any less for this genre, lmao.

I think I read maybe five fantasy titles this year (and I have read 85 books for reference, so… yeah). I used to really love it back in the day, but now I don’t have the brainpower or the patience for it.

I still read some YA fantasy titles here and there (Rick Riordan does owe this ass after all), but I hardly ever go out of my way to keep up with new fantasy series.

A book you have bought but will never read? (This can be a book you have unhauled/returned to the library unread.)

14942. sy475 I bought Virginia Woolf’s Mrs. Dalloway back in 2018, mostly because it had a cute cover, and it seemed short and not super intimidating, but I got to page like 50 and there were nO DIALOGUES.

The book does not have dialogues.

It’s just humongous paragraphes that literally last for PAGES as this woman talks and talks and talks about her life, and Jesus Christ, I am surprised I even made to page 50.

A series you have no interest in reading OR a series you started and have DNFed?

I DNFed a lot of series, sorry.

I started City of Bones, thought it was boring AF, never finished the first book and despite having a weird amount of knowledge of the Shadowhunters universe, do not intend on reading anything else in this universe.

The Winner’s Trilogy by Marie Rutkowski – The first and second book in the series were being sold for a really good deal, so I bought both but ended up only reading the first one. Literally can not tell you anything that happens in the book.

I actually read the first two books in the Remnant Chronicles series, but the fact absolutely *nothing* happened in the second book turned me off entirely and I never finished it. (Plus, the 3rd book was like 600 pages long. Miss ma’am, maybe you could’ve taken some of that plot and put on the second book then).

A new release you have no interest in reading?

49504061. sy475 Uhhh, bold of you to assume I keep up with new releases.

But I heard a lot of people reading “The Once and Future Witches”, and while I definitely am not that interested in historical/fantasy books, I also wouldn’t read it because of the trigger warnings, as I am sensitive to some of the topics discussed in it.

Y’all, that’s it! I will be tagging Beck and Ruby for this one. Please don’t be mad if I said I have no interest in reading your favorite book/series/author – it happens with the best of us! Let me know in the comments which series you’ve DNF-ed and what’s a new release you have no interest in picking up!

  1. i am one of the legions of people who love the poppy war, but i am totally not offended that you have no interest in reading it! it’s definitely not a book for everyone, especially if you dislike long fantasy books. reading the series is very emotionally draining–and it can be triggering for some people, so if you don’t think it’s for you, it probably isn’t. also i meant to read the entire TMI and TID series this year bc i wanted to be caught up with the Shadowhunter books, and now i’m just… no thanks. book twitter dug up a lot of cassie clare’s past gross tweets about incest (seriously, why is that woman obsessed with incest) + she attacked minors on book twt a few months ago, so i’ve taken the entire shadowhunter chronicles off my tbr 😪 there are so many books anyway—i’m way too lazy to catch up at this point lmao

    • Yes, I completely forgot to mention the triggers from The Poppy War, but it definitely would be a bit too much for me to handle, though I hear most of them are only in one specific chapter.
I had heard of the incest thing on TikTok before, but I legit thought it was a joke or a meme? And I am shocked that it is for real. That’s really weird tbh. And, yes, the series is humongous, so it definitely would take a while to catch up, hahah. Probably best to spend that time with better books and authors!
      Thanks for reading, Caitlin! 💕

    • I totally understand the hype affecting our perception of books. There are definitely more than a few books that I gave like 4 stars to, and now looking back, I don’t think I did enjoy it that much. Considering how long the series is, is probably for the best you figured right at the beginning it wasn’t for you.
      Thanks for reading, Tasya! ❤️

  2. I love your answers! City of Bones is probably one of the weaker books from TMI, but tbh I don’t fault anyone for DNFing the series early because… it gets worse (and whether it gets better is debatable). I lowkey don’t want to read The Poppy War either, mostly because it sounds painful and do I really want to sign up for 500 pages of pain? No. I may pick it up one day because I do like adult fantasy, but it’s not going to be any time soon. I also relate to you not keeping up with new releases haha. Time in 2020 doesn’t feel real 😔

    Curtido por 1 pessoa

    • Hahah, I legit thought you were going to say that it gets better after the first one, hahah.
It does sound painful, so I completely understand. As someone who mostly reads YA contemporary for the fluff, reading so much pain definitely does not appeal to me, hahah.
Thank you so much for reading, Ngoc! And for tagging me!

  3. I’m honestly kind of glad you don’t want to read the Poppy War, because I really don’t either, I felt kind of alone on that decision 😅 I’ve read the trigger list and I don’t think I’ll be able to read it.

I’ve read City of Bones and it was TERRIBLE, you’re making all the right decisions there. Cassie Clare needs to stop putting her kinks in YA books, among other problems.

    Curtido por 1 pessoa

    • OK BUT I WAS SO SHOCKED ABOUT THE KINK THING???? I’d seen people talking about it on Tik Tok but I legit thought it was a meme or a joke. Uhhhh, yeah, that makes the amount of borderline incest plotlines very weird. I am glad I didn’t continue then, lol.
Thank you so much for stopping by! 💛

  4. This looks like such a fun Tag 🥰I also have to reveal that I don’t plan on reading The Poppy War, so you’re not alone 😄 I’m happy so many people love the series but the heavy content isn’t something I think I can handle. I also never finished the Mortal Instruments series, as I didn’t read the last book. I wanted to push through but then gave up as I didn’t enjoy reading the books anymore 😅

    Curtido por 1 pessoa

    • I am so surprised so many people said they also don’t have an interest in The Poppy War! Well, at least I’m glad I’m not alone in this, hahah.
I’d also find really intimidating to start The Mortal Instruments too, even if I wanted to (which I don’t lol), because of the amount of books in the series. It’s a lot to commit to!
Thank you so much for reading, Caro! 😊

    • Hahah, it’s so funny we have the same experience with the Shadowhunters universe. It’s such a huge one and I know so many people love it, and I even find myself thinking if I shouldn’t give it another chance considering I only read half of the first book and there are like, I don’t even know, 15 more since? lol But considering I’m not even a huge fan of fantasy, I don’t think it will be for me ever.
Thank you so much for stopping by, Leyanis! 💕

  5. The Poppy War is very popular and it gets more popular with each book in the series which I like because I did enjoy the first book and I’m excited for the rest. But I can certainly see why it wouldn’t appeal to everyone. I mean I love fantasy and even I have to build myself for some of the big, heavy books sometimes so if it isn’t your thing then I can completely understand why.
Yep, I’m the same with classics. I have a little list I want to read but most I’m like no, although I never pictured myself reading any classics so this is new. Most I’ll probably read via audio though. The Pictures of Dorian Gray is on my list too and Wuthering Heights because I saw the last line and decided I needed to experience that, haha !!
I have wanted to read Mrs. Dalloway because I really love books set on one day, but no dialogues, whatt?!?!? That is like my favourite bit of books !! Maybe I won’t be reading it, my library does have the audio so I might try it one day and see how long I last but no dialogue !!! That sounds ….. not that great, haha !!

    Curtido por 1 pessoa

    • I am currently reading Wuthering Heights and I’m super curious about the last line now, hahah. I don’t think I’ve heard it before!
I was really surprised, because considering the book was set in one day and it wasn’t super long, I legit thought it would be one of those “easy” classics. It really is not. At least I found it to be super dense, and I don’t remember reading a single dialogue, hahahah.
Thank you soooo much for stopping by, Sophie! 💕

  6. Ooh this is such an interesting tag! Always fun to switch things up and talk about the things we don’t like ;)
Haha I’m right there with you on classics—there are so few that I have any interest in reading that the list of classics I WON’T read could probably take up an entire post. And I completely agree about SJM. Even if I were interested in her books, the toxicity of many of her fans would turn me off them.
I loved The Once and Future Witches but I can definitely understand why you wouldn’t want to pick it up. It’s always good to know your own reading tastes!

    Curtido por 1 pessoa

    • Not to mention there are simply *so* many classics out there. I’m sure there are probably more I could be interested in, but for now, I’m happy with just very ew titles, hahah.
It’s a shame that the fandom does ruin the experience for so many people. I think that’s true for a lot of other fandoms, not just SJM, but it was one of my most recent turn-offs and I really don’t know *why* people are so defensive of their favorite series/authors if someone doesn’t like it, honestly. It shouldn’t be a big deal, lol.
Thank you so much for stopping by, Margaret! 😊

  7. Oop Lais being a bit controversial today hehe. Though I have no shade to offer, I quite enjoyed reading all of your answers. I,,, do want to read The Poppy War because I want to see what everyone’s talking about but at the same time, am VERY scared. But I 1000% agree on SJM. I just,,, don’t care. I’ve been tempted before but also just haven’t gotten around to it. Though I do maybe want to try out Crescent City?? Maybe. It be big haha

  8. I loved reading this! I’m glad I’m not alone about the poppy war. I hear everyone raving about it and i’m so happy it’s getting a lovely success, i just don’t think i can handle this kind of content at all, soooo i’m going to pass on that one, too, haha :)
