my one year blog anniversary!

personal.

Hello, friends!

This is a really exciting post, because officially a year ago today, I was posting my first blog post on THE BOOKISH SKIES. It feels kinda surreal, because I don’t feel like I’ve been posting for this long at all. At the same time, I have a lot that I’m thankful and regretful for and so it truly feels like a while.

I wish I could host a more exciting one year anniversary post, but this is just going to be a lot of thoughts and rambles, so I apologize in advance.

THE BOOKISH SKIES is not my first blog, but it is the one I’m most confident in. A couple of you probably remember my Tumblr blog days, but it’s here where I feel the most comfortable and where I started to connect with most of you.

Here, I’ve surpassed 100 followers (unfortunately, the only stat recap you’ll see in this post, not only because I do not care that much about stats but also because I don’t know where to see this in WordPress lol), I’ve connected with people from all over the world, I’ve started a feature to talk about my own country, I’ve read over 50 books, completing my Goodreads goal for the first year without lowering it halfway through the year.

REWIND TO MY FIRST POST

I won’t link you to it, because it’s a bit embarrassing, but I talked about a few things there that have definitely changed.

  • I wasn’t happy with my layout. And while I’m still not 100% satisfied with it, I like my current layout a lot more than my old one. It fits my personal aesthetic a lot better, and I feel like I can be more creative with it. I’d still LOVE to be able to change the theme colors, but it doesn’t bother me as much anymore.
  • I’d just graduated from high school. Even though it’s been a full year, it truly feels like I just graduated. I think it’s because I’m still a kid at core and haven’t aged at all since 2015, which is a huge problem, considering I’ll soon be 20 and have no idea of adulthood whatsoever, lol.
  • I didn’t know I’d been accepted into my dream college. By the time I wrote that post, I had yet to complete the second step in my college entrance exams and I really didn’t know where I was going! It sounds exciting, but I was pretty anxious at the time and barely sleeping. I am so happy everything turned out great!
  • I’d read only 18 books. I spent the entire year of 2018 mostly watching movies and read only 18 books. And I am so, so proud of myself for saying that for 2019, I’ve actually read 60+ books. It’s a really good feeling, because reading is a huge passion of mine and I love the person I am when I am reading. During 2018, I felt so disconnected of myself and all my hobbies looked like burdens. It’s really good to be reconnected with my favorite thing in the world.

THE BEST PART OF THE LAST YEAR

  • I read more. I’m sorry to repeat myself, but this is definitely the best part about the past year. I’m so glad I’ve read so much. I am so glad I’ve listened to so much music. I’m so glad I can *tell* what has happened in each month, because I’m actually living and not just going through motions like I was throughout 2018. It’s a really, really good feeling.
  • I’ve met so many amazing people. I am so, so, so glad for all the people I met through book blogging. Y’all are the nicest community I have ever met. I specifically want to thank Marta, Sophie, Olivia, Marie and Caitlin, for all their thoughtful and nice comments who have made me smile and warmed my heart through rough patches. But not only them, truly. Every single one of you who take the time to read my posts and comment: I couldn’t be more thankful. I truly do not deserve y’all.
  • I’ve been inspired by so many bloggers. The best part about blogging to me is how much I learn from what you all have to say too. Annie, Lauren, Ngoc, Taasia are just a few of the bloggers I have met here that have either driven me to buy a new book, listen to a new song or just inspired me with their words and intelligent posts.

LOOKING FORWARD

I really hope to continue blogging for a long time. There’s a lot that I don’t know about the future – I feel like those years when you’re walking to adulthood are always so unpredictable, because there’s literally no stability to my life whatsoever lol -, but I really, really hope I can find more balance to continue blogging.

I really want to figure out a better schedule for the new year, so I can be more consistent in both posting and blog hopping. I don’t have a lot of goals besides that, tbh. Of course it will be nice to grow my following, but I am satisfied with what I have and am not aiming towards any number. I also don’t dream of getting ARCs or participating in book tours or anything like that. My only goal is to be a better blogger & reader, in the best of my ability.

For anyone that has read any of my posts in the past year: thank you so much. I am really happy with everything I’ve achieved and hope to continue growing with you guys! 💛

  1. Aw.. this was such a lovely post and I thoroughly enjoyed reading it!! Of course happy one year bloggiversary Lais!! 💛 I am so happy I got to meet you through blogging as I adore your posts and you are always so delightful to talk to!!

I am just like you when I look back at my older posts I’m not a fan of the design and how I set things out. I like that you always get to grow with design and improve!!
And yes I don’t feel like an adult at all and I’m 21 in less than 2 months. I feel like I haven’t past the age of 17 at all and now it getting past the point where it is okay not to know. It’s very stressful, how do you feel like an adult?!? I have no idea!
But it is wonderful that you had a better year in terms of getting into hobbies and reading more!! I’m so happy for you. It does make you feel better I find!!
I absolutely loved getting to meet people from all over the world with blogging too. It is great that we can use this platform to interact about something we are all passionate about!! Thank you so much for mentioning me, that’s so sweet and I’m glad I could make you smile. I’ve loved talking to you 💛

I’m so happy you want to continue with blogging (yay) and I look forward to the next part of your journey!

    • thank you sososooooo much, sophie! your support truly means the world – you’ve always been the nicest, ever since my first few posts, and i’m so thankful! 💛
ughhh, i’m so glad i’m not the only one who feels this way! recently, i’ve been feeling almost guilty for enjoy so much “teenage” stuff, like YA books and teenage-centered TV shows, because i feel like i should be enjoying more “adult” things. and i’m not even that old yet, lol. adulting can be such a complicated thing!
thank you sooooo much, honestly! i’m really happy to be a part of this community; it’s helped me and inspired so much and i feel *so* great being here. once again, tysm for all your kind words throughout this year! 💞

  2. Happy blogiversary Lais! I totally agree with you on the layout. I find that my blog layout is not completely perfect, and mine currently doesn’t really fit my aesthetic. But tbh, I’m too lazy to change any of it.

    • thank you so muchhh! honestly, layout is probably the one thing i don’t think i’ll ever be 100% satisfied with. it’s so hard finding something that both fits your aesthetic, but also the limitations of a free-wordpress theme, as well as trying to be unique… there’s so much to consider, i can totally understand not ever finding the mood to stress out about it, hahah.
thank you sooo much for reading, emily! 💛

  3. Happy one-year blog anniversary, Lais!! <3
I'm really, really happy for you, that you've found what makes you happy and keep going, that you've found your people, and I'm so honoured that I'm part of the people you're the happiest from having met. I'm very happy I met you too! :D
I hope you're still here in one, two, five years, and as many more, as you'd like. Your words matter a lot and as long as you like it here, that's what's important! I know it's very complicated to keep a consistent blogging schedule but we got this!!
    * sending you lots of hugs and love *

    • thank you soooo much, marta!
ugh, i knoooow! i really wish i was better at keeping up with schedules in general, because i feel like my life consists of procrastinating for 2 weeks straight then trying to do absolutely everything in a weekend, and it’s not healthy at all, plus it puts me behind on blogging/reading and doing the things i love. let’s hope we can all find more balance in the new year!
once again, thank you so much for all your kind words throughout the year and for reading through this one! ❣️

      • same! I considered writing “being more consistent” in a new years resolution list but I genuily think it’s not gonna happen. My life is chaotic, filled with tasks, and in one moment everything could change. I do hope I can find some balance tho! <3

  4. OMG I’M SO PROUD, LAIS!!! You really have grown soo much and your blog is definitely one of my favorites.
I definitely read a lot this year as well! And, of course, I’ve made a lot of new friends, like you. It amazes me that even several months ago, when I first met you, your blog was already so proficient and so out there!! I personally am in love with my design (cuz I didn’t do it ahah) and yours is gorgeous too!! 😉 You talked about feeling like you’re not aging, and I think I get that, but right now I feel much older, like I aged three years in one. I’d say I’m much more politically aware and I understand things better. You probably also have some similar experiences! 😀 And congratulations on getting into your dream college- that is so amazing and you deserve every bit of it ☄
Congrats on one year and here’s to many many more!! 😙💛 I’m so glad to share this milestone with you!

    • AHHHH, TYSM!!!!!!
i think it’s really hard to find a perfect design right away, but yours is really gorgeous (blue is my favorite color, so i’m definitely biased, hahah).
i think that’s awesome! i definitely think i grew in some fronts, but for the most part, i feel like most of my interests have remained the same, which is why i feel like i haven’t aged much. but i think it’s awesome you feel much more mature now.
thank you sooooo much, aditi! you’re the best! 😊

  5. Lais, this post was BEAUTIFUL. I’m so honored that you view me as a friend, because I definitely do too :(( Reading and replying to my comments have been some of the highlights of my blogging career as well. I truly think that your blog is one of the most underrated ones out there (You might not be a hundred percent happy with your aesthetic, but I am, and I LOVE IT), and I just LOVE your voice SO MUCH. seriously, why does everyone sleep on you??
Also, I’m so glad that you got to read more since joining the book blogging community! Joining also helped me to read sooo much more than I normally would. I’m so happy that book blogging made me read more, because since then I’ve discovered so many good books, and I’ve read from so many diverse voices!
Happy one year blogiversary, Lais!! I hope that you continue blogging for years to come, because I’ll seriously devour ALL your posts <3

  7. LAIS!! Congratulations on one year!!! I am SO, SO happy for you and proud of you for all of your successes this year. I truly can’t believe it’s only been a year, I feel as if we’ve been talking for so much longer than that.💗From your book recommendation posts to discussions to the posts where I’m able to learn more about Brazil, I absolutely adore the content you put out and genuinely you are one of my most favorite blogs. But more than that, I adore YOU! Thank you for being such a supportive, kind, sweet friend. You’ve impacted me positively and I’m very very grateful for you.☺️

i am really grateful to have you as well! our conversations always makes me happy, and likewise, i’m really inspired by your posts. you always have the kindest words and make me realize how great this community can really be.
thank you SOOOOO muchhh for reading this & for being so supporitve always! ❤️

  8. Ahh CONGRATULATIONS! (Haha, congratulation is a hard word to spell. I truly had to look at Olivia’s comment to spell-check myself. The weird sounding “t” got me.”
Wow, you got accepted into your dream school! That is so so amazing. Have you been dorm shopping and stuff?? A college freshman showed me her huge list of things she had to get, and I just want to say thank goodness Pinterest and blogs have lists for these things. I would definitely forget to buy some basic item.
60 plus books!! That’s so exciting that you reached your Goodreads goal with books to spare!
Lais, your words are so kind. I can’t believe words I’ve strung together have been inspirational to you. Thank you so much.

    • hahah, i get the struggle! only recently i found out that the word despite is spelled as despite and not despise, and i’ve been writing “despise” my WHOLE LIFE when what i meant was despite. it’s been a struggle not hiding myself on a cave for eternity after this one.
for colleges in brazil, you actually do not live in a dorm. i commute to school every day, which i think is how i got so much of my reading done this year, hahah.
thank You so much! and thanks for reading through this post, annie! 💛

      Curtido por 1 pessoa

      • HA, that must have been an insane realization to have!! Haha dang. Nobody lives in dorms in Brazil?? Ohh, that’s nice. I’m so tempted to take a study hall next year so I can read for a good hour every day. Do you guys have study hall? And what are you reading right now? You’re welcome!!

        Curtir

      • Percy Jackson is one of my favorite series too. I have several of the books, and I know that a few of them were borrowed books from my fourth grade teacher’s bookshelves that I never returned. I don’t really reread books, but when I was younger and didn’t have anything to read, I would reread Percy Jackson. Especially The Mark of Athena and The Last Olympian. Do you have favorites? Hahaha, of course :))

        Curtir

      • i’d re-read them all the time too and the last olympian is my favorite as well, along with titan’s curse. they’re probably some of my most well-read books: the spines are all broken and the foil for the title is missing, so you can barely read the title now, lolol. i’d never get rid of them, though! there’s a lot of sentimental value💛

  9. Congratulations on one year of blogging, that’s amazing and I’m glad you’re so happy here on WordPress (: Reaching 100 followers is fantastic too. Plus the amount that you’ve read is amazing as well. I hope you continue to love reading and blogging (: I loved reading your post and look forward to more in the future (:
