a trip to my home country: birthdays & celebrations

myhomecountrynovo

Happy birthday to me, I guess!

Today’s post will be a shorter one, but hopefully, I’ll be able to explain to you all about some traditions when celebrating your birthday in Brazil. Obviously, this is a really personal day, so everyone can have different things for their birthdays, but those are just some common things people do.

ONE. FESTAS

Festas = parties. And birthday parties are obviously a must.

In Brazil, a lot of parties are thrown at people’s houses, but if you want something fancier, you’d typically rent a bigger location. These places where you can host parties at are called “buffets”. A lot of kids throw birthday parties there, because there are arcades and other entertaining things to do. Plus, there will always be a dance floor with some early 2000s playlist going on.

Renting a location is really expensive, though, so I’ve only had two of my birthday parties being thrown at “buffets”. (I don’t know why we call it buffet, btw. It’s really weird). All my other birthday parties as a kid were thrown at home, and that’s still how it’s typically done.

can we take a second to appreciate this buffet decoration of my 7th birthday party when i wanted a barbie and the 12 dancing princesses theme? and just this amazing picture in general, taken in a digital camera from the early 2000s? Ugh. the Aesthetic.

Another thing it always happens is that, whenever you go to a party in a buffet, there’s always some favors at the end. As a kid, I remember always coming back home from a party with a new small toy or some candy!

TWO. THE FOOD

It’s a shame that birthday parties all over the world aren’t like the ones in Brazil, because the food is *the absolute best part*. Obviously, each party is different, so people can have whatever food they want, but the traditional caterer include:

  • BOLINHA DE QUEIJO. The literal translation for this is “cheese ball“, so I think you can expect it being delicious AF. It’s simply a deep fried mini cheese ball and it’s likely you’ll eat more than you want when at a birthday.
  • COXINHA. Though this is a really popular Brazilian snack that people eat at any circumstance tbh, coxinhas are really popular at parties. It’s a deep fried dough with chicken inside and crazy delicious.
  • BRIGADEIRO. This is another “snack” that can be had at any time and is not specific to parties, but it’s also not a party without brigadeiro. It is a dessert, technically, and typically served alongside with the birthday cake. I don’t know how to explain it, but it’s the best thing ever.
  • BEIJINHO. Similar to brigadeiro, but instead of chocolate, it’s actually condensed milk and coconut sprinkled on top. This one you’ll only see at birthday parties.

Another weird thing is that there’s this tradition where the first slice of the birthday cake should be given to the one most special to you.

THREE. HAPPY BIRTHDAY SONG

I was thinking about recently how the birthday song is sort of universal? Like, it has the same melody, no matter whether it is English, Korean, Russian or Portuguese! This is how it sounds when we sing Happy Birthday in Portuguese, btw:

At the end of the song, we also have to scream:

É pique, é pique
É pique, é pique, é pique
É hora, é hora
É hora, é hora, é hora
Ra-tim-bum!

And then the person’s name repeatedly. Again, another one of those things that don’t really have an explanation, but it’s probably because, unlike the English version, we do not fit the name of the person within the song (like you’d say: “Happy birthday, dear Lais”), so they probably added that so we could chant the person’s name too.

FOUR. PERSONAL TRADITIONS

Okay, so I’ve kinda went through everything that happens during a typical celebration in Brazil, but that’s not what most people do to celebrate their birthdays, especially once you turn a certain age.

What people typically do is going to a restaurant, with friends and family, eating some good food and doing the things they like the most for their birthdays.

That’s what I do too. For the past three years, I’ve created this sort of tradition during my birthday: my family and I go to my favorite restaurant and then eat Ben & Jerry’s ice cream for desert. I then like going to a bookstore where I can get some favorite books as birthday gifts.

Apart from that, I don’t like doing a lot on my birthday. But I think it’s interesting I have a tradition and I wanted to share.

Now, let me know in the comments: what does the birthday song sound like on your country? And do you have any personal traditions for your special day? Let me know in the comments!

  2. First of all: Happy Birthday! Hope you had a great day!

It is really interesting to hear how you are celebrating birthdays in Brazil! :D The food sounds great. Are the brigadeiro made of almonds in the middle? It kind of looks like “punsjebolle” that we have in Norway/Sweden. They are often eaten at Christmas, but also throughout the year.

Here is a Norwegian version of the birthday song https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r8vjxu0F2LY

    • Thank you so muchhh! I was sick so it wasn’t the best day ever, but I still had a good time.
Brigadeiros are traditionally just chocolate, but I’ve seen ones with almonds before, but they’re not as common.
Wow, the Norway version is completely different from what I expected! It sounds adorable, but kind of complicated. Is there a moment in the song where you chant the birthday person’s name?
Thank you so much for stopping by! 💞

  4. HAPPY BIRTHDAY LAIS!! (belated, I’m sorry( I hope you had a wonderful day and I absolutely loved hearing about the different traditions!!
Festas sounds like fun and I’m all for the early 2000’s playlist haha!! I love that you get a favour at the end of parties as it is such a nice touch. I remember when I went to parties which were often at this indoor playarea with bouncy castles and slides, you always got a party bag with things in it!! It’s a shame they don’t do it for adults I think, haha!! Your decorations for your 7th birthday party are amazing– I love it!!
Wow all the food looks amazing *heart eyes*– I love hearing about different food and I think the tradition that the person most special to you gets the first slice of cake is really sweet (no pun intended), lol!!
I never really thought of birthday songs in other places but its really interesting and I listened to the video and they do have the same tune which is really weird and cool. I love it!!
I often go to a restaurant on my birthday too for a meal with everyone!!
There are so many lovely things and it sounds amazing– again I hope you had a great day!! <3

    • Thank you sosoooo much!
Same here! When I started growing older and stopped getting favour/party bags at the end of a party, it was a really sad moment. They were so much fun and typically delicious!
By writing this post, I actually found out where the birthday song originated and it’s really funny that it actually got translated to so many languages and became a tradition at so many different countries even though it just started as an American song.
Thank you so much for reading! 💞

  6. Happy belated birthday, Lais! I hope you had a wonderful day!! All that food looks delicious and I hope you ate tons of it xD I feel I could eat bolinhas de queijo ALL DAY! * heart eyes * We also have coxinhas and brigadeiros here, most birthday parties are thrown at home with tons of homemade food, mostly sweets, sandwiches, and fried food, easy to eat with your hands hahaha And when I was a kid a lot of parties were thrown in specific places held for parties, with things to play and all. That Barbie and the 12 Dancing Princess themed party looks adorable (I was trash for it tbh). Nowadays, my friends just invite me to their houses or to go out drinking with them!

    • Thank you so muchhh, Marta!
It really is the best! I didn’t know you had coxinhas and brigadeiros in Portugal too!
I believe these places to throw parties at are more common than I thought worldwide! They were so much fun and one of my biggest gripes is that there’s no such things for adults, so every time I go to parties, I can’t go at any of the trampolines or slides, which is a shame, hahah.
Thank you so much for stopping by, Marta! 😌

      • Saaaaaame! My friends’ birthday parties now are going out for drinks and clubs, sometimes we go to the movies. I didn’t like that at all for me so I kept throwing my birthday parties at home, until I was 18. We could play Wii and have homemade food hahaha
