monthly wrap up: march, ’19

monthlywrapupnovo

Hello, fellow bloggers!

March is over, and I’m kind of very excited about it. Mostly because fall is approaching and finally the weather will get better around here. I feel like I’ve been dying due to the heat for the past four months, so I really can not wait for it to get cooler.

Despise that, March wasn’t exactly an eventful month for me and I’m kinda glad that I had enough time to complete all the books I wanted to read!

HIGHLIGHTS

  • The Jonas Brothers are back! This is the best thing that has happened to me in the past three years. No joke there. I was a huge JoBros fan growing up – they were the first concert I’ve ever attended! – and seeing them back together just gave me so many feelings. I probably cried watching their Carpool Karaoke and all the interviews they’ve done in the James Corden show are absolutely hilarious! Sucker, their new single, is also phenomenal and has been on repeat for weeks now.
  • I’ve had a lot of movie marathons. If there’s one thing that happens when I’m feeling uninspired and *meh* (like I was at the beginning of the month), is I end up marathoning tons of movies. I did an Ashton Kutcher marathon, where I watched all of his iconic rom-coms (What Happens in Vegas remains my favorite), a Maze Runner re-watch (that literally made me cry my eyeballs off, once again) and I’m currently watching all of the Marvel movies in chronological order to prepare for Avengers: Endgame.
  • I got back in my writing game – and I’m handwriting this time! I know some of you are cringing at the thought of it. The mere thought of writing an entire book by hand gave me a headache – and cramps -, but I realized that writing on a screen was stressing me out. It felt like I was trying to be an author, constantly comparing myself and getting distracted by social media and the internet in general. When I sit down with a notebook, though, it feels like I have no one else to please but myself and it has grounded me back to what really made me fall in love with this idea in the first place. I’ve only tried it for a week now, so I don’t know yet if I’ll be able to keep up with it, but I’m letting all my ideas out and it’s been refreshing.

Where She Went was actually a re-read for me. I talked about this book on the blog before and I was eager to revisit this story. Where She Went takes place three years after the events of If I Stay and it focuses on Adam, as he’s now a famous rockstar, lead of the rising punk band, Shooting Star. In fact, Adam is a super angsty and anxious character, and his perspective was absolutely marvelous to read from. Even though this book has its problems – like all the numerous sexist remarks -, I still love it so much? Honestly, just give me all the books with angsty musicians and I’ll devour and love them forever.

When I was planning my reads for March, I was most excited to read The Foxhole Court. I was 100% sure I was going to love this book. It’s the first installment in the All for the Game series and it follows the team of the Foxes, for this fictional sport called Exy. It centers around a lot of male characters, including our protagonist, Neil Josten, who has a big secret about his past. My main problem with this book was: THERE’S NO PLOT. The characters are not moving to any specific goal. The writing is so all over the place. You’re being introduced to these characters over and over again, and I still feel like I don’t know them at all. Also: they are ALL bad-boys. Like, I am broken and damagedTM, so I can act like an asshole. It was excrutiating to get through the 8-hour-long audiobook. I am still going to carry on with the series, though, because I refuse to believe that this is what the hype was about.

Truly Devious, by Maureen Johnson was a ride. I took about two weeks to finish this book, much due to the fact I completely overestimated my English skills and I had to focus A LOT to fully understand it. So, it was 100% my fault that it took me so long to get into it. But, once I did, it was brilliant! The mystery was engaging and so was the setting – boarding school with lots of mysteries? Count me in. The characters were also adorable, and even if I didn’t love Stevie, I certainly liked David and Nate a lot. I am literally dying to pick up the second installment in the series – hopefully, I’ll be able to do it until the end of the year?!

★★☆☆☆

I feel like March was a polarizing month, with some amazing reads and other very disappointing ones. Every Heart a Doorway falls on the latter category. I realized that Rick Riordan is probably the only author who I trust to mix fantasy/mythology and our contemporary world. This book had a lot to do with portal fantasies and boarding schools, and I couldn’t care at all. The murder mystery was also incredibly predictable (and this is coming from someone who can never figure out mysteries) and the way it was handled was beyond unrealistic. Like, a girl is found dead in the morning and then they move on to class as if nothing had happened? Uh, sure. I did appreciate the diversity, though! We had an asexual protagonist and a trans side character, but still it wasn’t enough for me to rate it any higher.

I also finally finished Crooked Kingdom! It’s been a year since I last read Six of Crows, but I can safely say I’m free to check the Tumblr tag without being spoiled now! This installment was not as good as the first one, sadly, but it definitely changed my opinion on a lot of things! I’ve officially solidified Matthias as my favorite character, along with Nina. They’re my absolute sweethearts and I cried so much with them throughout this book. I’ve also started to like Kaz & Inej more, which was surprising. The ending was truly what knocked down the book for me, as I was sure it’d be a 5 stars. It was underwhelming and disappointing for such a strong start. Nonetheless, I still love Leigh Bardugo’s writing style and I do consider these books worth the hype.

Far From The Tree was my last read for March. This book showed up kinda randomly in my life, as I saw it in a bookstore once and have been dying to finish reading ever since. I ended up listening to it in audiobook, which I’m not sure yet if I recommend. I think I’d have liked it better if we had different narrators for each perspective – kinda like the Odd One Out audiobook. Nonetheless, the story really captivated me. Maya was definitely an annoying character, but she was written to be unlikeable, so I guess that’s okay. Her relationship with her sister felt a bit unrealistic, but my love for Grace and Joaquin (especially Joaquin) made the book so worth it for me. I cried multiple times – sometimes in public – with this book, so I can’t recommend any more than that.

MONTHLY PLAYLIST

This is the first time I’m writing about music here, but I really liked the idea of sharing my monthly playlists here as well.

Music is a huge part of my life, and I’m constantly listening to something. For the year of 2019, I wanted to do something different, and so I started creating monthly playlists, in which I pretty much incorporate all songs that match my mood for the month.

I warn you in advance: these playlists are suuuuuper random. You can be listening to Billie Eilish in one second and Jackson 5 in the other. It’s just how my musical taste works sometimes.

LOOKING FORWARD

Hopefully, in April, I’ll be able to read just as much as I did in March! I do have a lot of books I want to complete in the upcoming month, with some much anticipated reads, so I hope to find time to read them all!

Let me know in the comments what you’ve accomplished recently and what are some of your goals for April! 🌟

    • I also saw a lot of people comparing it to The Raven Cycle, which is what made me want to read it in the first place! I think the similarities are just because it’s centered around a group of boys with some angst between them, but I found that the characters in the Raven Cycle felt more dynamic. Hopefully, you’ll enjoy it more than I did if you ever get around to it!
Thank you so much for the comment, Emily! 💛

  1. I totally agree with the crooked kingdom thing! I just didn’t like how it ended between Kaz and Inej like it was always going to be hard for Leigh to write them together because of their characters but I think it just went a bit overboard, like that just wasn’t Kaz at all! But everyone really loved it so I kinda kept my mouth shut 🤐

And I’m too young for the Jonas brothers round one but I’m so here for round two! Kevin has had a total glow up and all their vocals! Who’s your favourite?

    Curtido por 1 pessoa

    • I totally get that! I did like Kaz & Inej and I feel like I already expected them to have such an ending, but I do understand your point. It’s fair to share some more unpopular opinions towards this series, though! It’s very well loved and I understand the pressure to keep some opinions for yourself, but I really wish more people would talk about the things that they didn’t enjoy in some of these more hyped books! So, thanks for sharing!
Kevin was actually my favorite growing up! I know no one likes him, but I just thought he was so funny and adorable! I will admit, though, that the Sucker MV kinda made me fall head over heels at Nick, hahaha. What about you? Do you have a favorite now?
Thanks for the comment, El! 😊

  2. Okay, YES OMG I’m currently reading The Foxhole Court right now and it’s SO, SO excruciating to read. All of the positive reviews lied?? :( Like, I have so many friends obsessed and heads over heels in love with that book and the series and honestly I’m kind of side-eying them all right nowwwww. HOW. IT’S SO BADLY WRITTEN. I’ve been 63% in for the last week, and I’m pushing myself to read through the rest of the ebook (it’s so hard though).
Also, YES to what you said about urban fantasy: I hardly trust authors in the realm of urban fantasy, and I’m even hesitant to watch tv shows like that sometimes. I thought Every Heart a Doorway was a really engaging read and easy to consume, but it wasn’t.. substantial or held any weight, really? Like, I’m not that emotional about what happened. Also, I totally expected it to be more ~fantastical~ and have the main character travel through worlds and explore places (I didn’t know it was a novella originally) but like no??? Not that I’m criticizing it for that aspect, because that was my own fault, but it was totally different from what I expected.
Anyways, I haven’t seen *that much* buzz for Far From the Tree, BUT literally everyone who’s read it has really loved it? Sooooo I’m considering reading it! Do you think I should listen to it as an audiobook or read it physically?

    Curtido por 1 pessoa

    • I KNOWWWW RIGHT UGH. I was so hyped because I saw so many reviews from people that I trust and I still don’t know whether or not I can tell you that it is worth continuing on. I do want to continue on with the series, because I’m confused that *this* is what people were praising but I don’t know if I want to go through the pain if the next two books are excrutiating as this one. It really was a mess, honestly.
I completely agree with you about Every Heart a Doorway! It truly didn’t feel substantial at all; it was a pretty forgettable read, actually.
And I would recommend the physical book for Far From the Tree, if you have the chance to, of course! The audiobook is okay, but it’s not that engaging, and I think that physically you’ll be able to perhaps connect with the characters more.
Thank you so so so much for the comment, Ju! 💞

      • Yesssss???! everyone also said that the next books in the foxhole court trilogy were SO GOOD and apparently the last book is really good and idk whether I should continue because tbh I just skipped over the book so I could mark it as finished on goodreads and just be DONE WITH IT. how did people bear the first book and even… continue?? who had the motivation and time and energy to read that book?? life questions.

Anyways, yeah!! I now so many people are hardcore fans of Every Heart a Doorway and its series and I don’t really see it? But I totally get that the world itself is pretty cool! I might continue the rest of the series, though, because I think Down Among the Sticks and Bones focuses on a fantasy aspect of the world and that seems really interesting to me.

Okay, I’ll try Far From the Tree physically when I can! <3 I'll let you know how I feeel.

  3. Aww, I’m sorry you didn’t really love the foxhole court because that’s actually one of my five star predictions :(( I enjoyed Every heart a doorway, but the points you made are so valid. I’m honestly questioning myself :”)

    • Ahhh, hopefully you’ll enjoy The Foxhole Court much more than I did! It is a book with very polarizing opinions, so you can still love it!
Every Heart a Doorway really wasn’t for me, but I’m glad I gave it a shot nonetheless, because the asexual rep made me super happy!
Thank you so much for the comment, Caitlin! ❣️

  4. YES, THE JONAS BROTHERS RETURN. I wasn’t ever obsessed with them back in the day (I was more into Hannah Montana hahah) but it actually makes me so happy that they’re back?? Not to mention Sucker is an amazing song.🤗
I just started Crooked Kingdom! I’m not really expecting it to live up to Six of Crows, I just knew I had to read it because, well, I need to know what happens to Inej after that horrible cliffhanger. And you’re so right, after I finish it I can safely look at Pinterest haha!
I love your playlist! I was thinking about putting music into my monthly recaps too, it’s always so fun to see what other people listen to and get recs.
    I hope you have a lovely April!💓

    • Hannah Montana really was a jam from back in the day, that’s for sure! I was into pretty much all things Disney-related, but the Jonas Brothers were my favorites. Sucker really is fantastic! I was so happy with this comeback!
Thank you soooo much! I would love to listen to your playlists; I’m currently trying to find songs for my April playlist, so it will come on handy!
Thank you so much for the lovely comment! 😌

  5. Hey,
I am so glad that you didn‘t enjoy the Foxhole Court either. I almosr feel guilty because everyone loves it but the series just hasn‘t been my kind of series. I read all the books but i just couldn‘t enjoy it as much as everyone else does.
Also, I have never been a fan of the Jonas Brothers but i really enjoy their new single and now I am excited to see what their album is gonna sound like.

    Curtido por 1 pessoa

    • I really am considering whether or not I should give all the books a try now. I feel like they have the potential to get better plot-wise, because the ending of the first one sounded promising, but I’ve definitely heard other people talking not so well about the series, so it really is a hit or miss case.
I’m so excited for their new album as well! I’m glad that even people who were not fans back in the day have enjoyed the new single; it really shows that is a song for everyone!
      Thanks for the comment! 💞

  6. SHAME ON ME BECAUSE I HAVEN’T LISTENED TO JONAS BROTHER’S NEW MUSIC! I was a huge fan of them too, I even had a notebook for my homework that had the three of them on the cover and I had such a crush on Nick haha But I’ve been really busy lately, and haven’t had time to do much! Goal for April: listen to it. And also keep up with blogging while dying with my workload )):
    Happy April <3

  7. I was never a Jonas Brothers fan back when they were first around, for some reason… but when they recently came back, I was so excited! 😂

Good luck with your writing! 😊 I used to hand write a lot of my writings, and then I would type them later. Try whatever works best for you!

    Curtir

    • Their songs are amazing! Sucker really is a great single; I’m so glad that so many people are excited and willing to support them, even if they weren’t fans from back in the day.
Thank you so much! Handwriting has been fun so far; it’s tiring, because I feel like my mind works a lot faster than my hand, but I think it’s been helpful to remind me why I like writing so much.
Thank you so much for the comment! 😊

  8. Wonderful post, Lais! I felt the exact same way about Every Heart a Doorway. It’s so hyped, and I had high expectations but it was quite dull and predictable. I’m so glad to hear you love Matthias and Nina!!! Matthias gets so much flack, even now, which makes me sad because he was my favorite too and his redemption arc was just fantastic!

    Curtido por 1 pessoa

    • Thanks, Aimal! Every Heart a Doorway was definitely a book I expected to like more than I did; because it’s a very short book, I didn’t think I’d be giving it much more than 3.5 stars, but it was still a let down.
I truly don’t understand that! Matthias is such a phenomenal character and he really was so well written! I miss him already.
Thank you so much for the comment! ☺️

  9. Movie marathons are fun to do!! What happens in Vegas is my favourite Kutcher film I think!! And I do love Marvel– there certainly is a a lot of movies to watch though 😂

I enjoy handwriting when writing– I definitely feel more focused on what I am writing!! I do a bit of both really but handwriting is good and I am glad you are getting back into writing!!

I do think the other books in the all for the game series are the stronger books so I hope you enjoy them more if you get to them!!
I am glad you enjoyed truly devious– I have heard good things about this book. And I have wanted to try it because I hardly ever read mysteries. I hope you get to the second one soon!! 😊
I have heard mixed things about every heart a doorway but I know some people who love it!! But after hearing a few bad things I am not sure I want to read it.
I think I prefer six of crows out of the two but it has been a while since I have read them. But I know I love the stories. I would love to reread them soon!!
I love that you are sharing your playlist— I listen so much to music now!! And my music taste is all over the place too 😂
I hope you have a wonderful April!! 💛

    Curtido por 1 pessoa

    • WHAT HAPPENS IN VEGAS IS SO UNDERRATED AND I’M SO HAPPY THAT YOU LOVE IT TOO! It’s my favorite Kutcher movie too, though A Lot Like Love comes close second.
If I watch a movie a day, I’ll take precisely 21 days to finish all the Marvel movies. It’s A LOT. I will be skipping some, though, like the first two Iron Man movies and Doctor Stranger, because I am not that interested in them, but it’s still a lot! It’s fun because I feel like it will help me get immersed in the Marvel universe fully, since I’m still a bit estranged to it.
That’s sooooo true! Handwriting definitely helps me focus more; and since I’m writing in English, it helps me to be more aware of Grammar too!
Truly Devious was great! The second one is already available on Scribd and I’m hoping to listen to the audiobook in April. I think you’ll enjoy it a lot if you ever pick it up!
Thank you so muchhh! I was excited to share my playlists as well, because music really is a huge part of my life.
Wishing you a great April too! Thank you so much for the lovely comment! ❤️

      • Yes it is a great movie— I have watched it sooo many times now!! I haven’t actually watched ‘A lot like love’ though so I will have to check that one out!!
Wow that is a lot— yes it is nice to get into the universe and get to know the characters!! Yes there are definitely certain marvel movies that I prefer over others!!
Yes, and that’s true handwriting makes you more aware of the things the computer usually does for you. Handwriting makes me rely on spellcheck less ahah!!!
That’s really great— yes I definitely want to pick it up one day!! :-)
Ah… I’m glad. I look forward to seeing more of your playlists!!
Thank you and you’re welcome!! <3

  10. I’m glad you find your writing groove again! There are plenty of authors who write by hand too. It doesn’t matter how you write them as long as you do :) JK Rowling started writing the Philosopher’s Stone on napkins after all.
I’m glad you consider Crooked Kingdom worth the hype! I still need to read the Six of Crows. I hope I’ll enjoy the series :)
My current plan for April is to win Camp Nanowrimo. So far so good… Haha

    Curtido por 1 pessoa

    • Ha, that’s true! It’s a little bit of a struggle because I feel like my mind wanders much faster than my hand, so I have to really slow down my thoughts and shift my focus. It’s making me pick on a lot of mistakes I perhaps wouldn’t have noticed, so it’s been a rewarding experience so far!
I’m sure you’ll really like the Six of Crows duology! It covers much darker topics than your typical YA fantasy.
Wishing you luck on Camp NaNoWriMo! 🙌🏼

  11. Ahhh. I’m just so happy I feel kind of silly haha about the jonas brothers and everything, all of the carpool karaoke and James Corden’s videos were hilarious and made me so happy. I feel like I’m back ten years ago and… It’s such a great feeling haha <3 <3
I'm SO happy you loved Far From The Tree! This is such an underrated book and I loved the siblings and all of the emotions while reading ahhhh. Such a great book <3 <3
I hope you will have a lovely April! <3

    • I’m so happy that they came back and did all those features on James Corden! It was a ture gift! 😍
Far From the Tree really is very underrated! I do believe it got nominated (or even won?) awards, but I still feel like the bookish online community does not hype it enough. It was beautiful and super moving!
Thanks for the lovely comment, Marie! ❣️

  12. Hi Lais! Your March sounded amazing! Far From the Tree is one of my favorite contemporary books, and I definitely ugly-cried a few times while reading it. If I manage to cry in public while reading a book, I know it’s a keeper 😉 Also — Crooked Kingdom! Yes!! I absolutely adore the Six of Crows duology, and I feel like Crooked Kingdom is definitely Kaz & Inej’s book. Their relationship developed so slowly but beautifully in the second novel, and even though I wanted to see more of them, the way Bardugo left them by the end of the book was perfect.

Good luck with writing that novel of yours! ❤️

    • I’m soooooooo glad you’ve also loved Far From the Tree! I genuinely feel like this book deserves more hype than it gets. It was super moving, indeed, and I was tearing-up in public which was not exactly a fun time, hahah.
I did like Kaz & Inej’s ending too! It was just what I expected from them, and I think fit their personalities pretty well.
Thank you so much, Zoie! 💛
